The Seattle Children’s Kids Marathon is structured to allow children—kindergarten through eighth grade—to complete a full 26.2 mile marathon at a rate that is fun and safe for their growing bodies “one mile at a time.” It also encourages them to read 13 books and perform 13 do rights (good deeds).

WHAT IS A MARATHON?

In ancient Greece, Phidippedes ran from the plains of Marathon to Athens to report about the Persian War. That is where the marathon got its name. Thousands of years later, people still run, but now they do it for fun.

About half a million people run marathons every year! People who run marathons train a lot. Your body must be in good shape to run a marathon. A marathon is 26.2 miles. The Seattle Children's Kids Marathon will get you on your way to being physically fit.

ON RACE DAY

Kids run the last 1.2 miles of their marathon together, starting at 5th and Harrison at Seattle Center, next to the Experience Music Project. They run around the Seattle Center, past the Space Needle and down Mercer Street, finishing their marathon in Memorial Stadium.

LEADING UP TO RACE DAY

Kids run or walk the first 25 miles of their marathon one mile (or half mile) at a time on a safe, secure route designated by parents, coaches or teachers. The program should take 6-8 weeks to complete depending on the fitness level of the child. A less-active child may need to start earlier to complete the program. As they are completing their miles, kids also complete their reading and do-rights (good deeds). REGISTER EARLY

Register as soon as you can so you have time to complete your miles, reading and do-rights before race day. You don't have to complete your miles, books or do-rights before you register!

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

After we receive your completed entry form and fee, you will receive your award tokens, award certificates and a confirmation of your registration. Instructions about picking up your packet will be included. We will also give you a map of the Kids Marathon Race Course. The map shows the Start Line and where family and friends can watch you finish.

RUN AS A GROUP

If your class would like to run the Seattle Children's Kids Marathon 2016 together, send in all your entry forms together. If you need entry forms, please call the Seattle Marathon Association office at 206.729.3660.

HOW TO REGISTER

REGISTRATION RULES

  • Entry fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. No refunds, transfers, medical comps or rollovers under any circumstances.
  • No confirmation postcard will be mailed for entries received after November 12, 2016. Be sure to provide a valid email address so you can receive your confirmation via email.
  • No Bandits. The Seattle Children's Kids Marathon does not allow Bandits on the course. Please show your support for our event by registering.

START TIMES + LOCATION

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26 2016 @ 10:00 am, 5TH + HARRISON

The race starts at 10:00am on Saturday November 26, 2015 at the Seattle Center, 5th and Harrison, next to the Experience Music Project. Kids and parents should arrive no later than 9:00am at the kids staging area located inside Memorial Stadium in the north bleachers, where we will have pre-event activities. If you haven't already picked up your race bib, you can do so Saturday morning, 7:30-9:30am in Memorial Stadium under the north bleachers. Make sure to bring your trackers so we can post them at the event on Race Day! Kids, parents and race officials will move from there to the Start Line together.

ARRIVE EARLY

Nearly 2,000 kids are expected to participate in this year’s Seattle Children's Kids Marathon. Please allow time for traffic, parking and check-in. Parking near the Seattle Center is available in several pay lots. Limited on-street parking is also available. For parking details, see the Race Day Parking Map.

SPECTATOR LOCATIONS

Spectators can watch finishers approach and cross the finish line inside Memorial Stadium.

HOW TO COMPLETE YOUR MARATHON

  • Find a safe place to run.
  • Walk or run 25 miles, read 13 books and perform 13 do rights (good deeds) between September 1st and November 25th.
  • Look at the schedule below for help in planning your runs.
  • Come to the Seattle Center on Saturday, November 26, 2016 to run the final 1.2 miles of your Marathon! Don't forget to bring your trackers!

TRAINING TIPS FOR YOUR MARATHON

Wear running shoes or sneakers and socks. Proper footwear helps prevent foot problems.
Run/walk with a friend. You can encourage each other that way. Talk while you run/walk, you can maintain the perfect pace that way.
Stretch your legs before you run. Stretching helps prevent injuries. Hold each stretch for 20 seconds without bouncing up and down.
Drink lots of water after you run and throughout the day. Water helps muscles do their work.
Get plenty of sleep. Your muscles need lots of rest so you can keep running/walking every day.
Eat a well-balanced diet including lots of protein and carbohydrates. Your body needs fuel to do its work!

A TRAINING SCHEDULE FOR YOUR MARATHON

Below is a training schedule with suggested distances or you may set up your own schedule. If you can only run or walk a little, keep trying. If you run or walk more than a mile per day, great! If you play a lot of soccer or other sports where you run a lot, this may be easy. Just remember to space your workouts so you are prepared to run or walk the final distance on Marathon Saturday! Early completion of the program is not recommended. The schedule leaves Saturdays and Sundays available for make up days or to give you a rest day during the week. It is important to keep track of your progress toward your goal. As you complete each mile, color or mark off each mile on the Run-O-Meter.

PARENT INFO

1. The first 25 miles are “honor” miles. Kids get the most from this experience if they earn these miles. Measure a safe, secure route, which will allow easy record keeping. A typical city block for example, is approximately 1/4 mile around. The track at the local high school is 1/4 mile around. You can even measure a route inside your home and run/walk it to reach the mileage goal. We encourage you to join your kids and make this a family event. Please follow the training tips on the registration brochure.

2. As your marathoner completes his/her goals, he/she can keep track of progress using the following trackers:

They can also use the Adult Marathon map to see where they would be if they were on the adult course. Daily record keeping is a lesson as kids chart their progress toward their goal.

3. Please present the “award tokens” at 5, 10, 15 and 20 miles (kids can choose the award they want). Present the chain with the first award token. Upon completion of 25 miles, present the 25-mile award. Special Read, Do-Right and Run Certificates are also iincluded and should be handed out for each goal reached. Make the awards presentation a special time. Recognition is important!

4. The final 1.2 miles will start at 10:00am on Saturday November 26, 2016 at the Seattle Center. Kids and parents should arrive no later than 9:00am at the kids staging area located inside Memorial Stadium in the north bleachers, where we will have pre-event activities. Make sure to bring your tracking meters so we can post them at the event on Race Day! Kids, parents and race officials will move from there to the Start Line together.

5. Please Note! Parents/Coaches, you may run with your child, but it is not mandatory. If you do choose to run, you will be required to wear a bib/runners number. For safety, no one is allowed on the course without a bib. Each child may have only one adult accompanying them. Every child who enters the event will be given two bibs with the same number—one for the child and one for an accompanying adult. For lost parent/child reasons, the child and adult bibs will both contain the child’s information. If you have a younger child in a stroller accompanying you, that child will have to be entered in the event and have a bib number to be on the course.

We would like to invite your school to the Seattle Children’s Kids Marathon 2016 on Saturday, November 26th at 10am at Seattle Center. The Seattle Children’s Kids Marathon is a great way to get kids excited about physical education and reward them for their accomplishments.

As a teacher, you decide how active a role you want to take in the event. You can register your students as a group or have them register individually.

If you would like printed entry forms and posters (full size 11x17) for promotion of the event at your school, please contact the Seattle Marathon Association, and we would be happy to send you as many as you need.

RACE AMENITIES

Kids Victory Recovery Area

The Kids Victory Recovery Area is located in the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. Kids will receive their space blanket, participant shirt and water as they cross the finish line in Memorial Stadium and will then proceed through the secured finisher chute to the Victory Recovery area where they will receive their Goody Bag containing their finisher certificate and medal, as well as refreshments and post event fun.

Note: Kids receive one complimentary t-shirt per entry.

PHOTOGRAPHS

MarathonFoto is the Official Photographer of the Seattle Marathon 10K Race. Be sure to smile for their cameras as you run or walk along the race course!  MarathonFoto will photograph you multiple times throughout the race course as well as before and after the race.  Smile when you see their photographers in the bright yellow vests and make sure your bib number is clearly centered and visible so they will be able to identify you.  MarathonFoto will also be at the finish line area taking photos to help you celebrate your accomplishment.  View and order your photos within 1 to 3 days after the race at www.marathonfoto.com.  

MEDALS + AWARDS

Kids get the following awards for finishing each of these mileposts:

  • 13 Books: A special certificate
  • 13 Do Rights: A special certificate
  • 5 miles: Award token, chain and award certificate
  • 10 miles: 10 mile award token and award certificate
  • 15 miles: 15 mile award token
  • 20 miles: 20 mile award token and award certificate
  • 25 miles: 25 mile bonus award token
  • Final 1.2 miles: Kids will receive their space blanket, participant shirt and water as they cross the finish line in Memorial Stadium and will then proceed through the secured finisher chute to the Victory Recovery Area where they will receive their Goody Bag containing their finisher certificate and medal.

PARKING + TRANSPORTATION

The Seattle Marathon Association does not provide transportation to the Start Line. Local pay lots and street parking are available at or near the Seattle Center. The parking garage at Fourth and Mercer will open at 5:45 am. See the Parking Map for more info. Be sure to allow time to park and walk to the Start Line. You can also find and reserve parking before the event with Parking Panda.

WALKING TO THE START LINE FROM THE WESTIN SEATTLE

For participants staying at The Westin Seattle, the Start Line is a 0.9 mile walk from the hotel. Head north on 5th Ave. Follow the Monorail track (running above 5th Ave.) to the start at 5th and Harrison.

WEATHER

Come prepared for a variety of weather conditions. Average temperature for late November is mid-40s (7 deg. C) with cloudy and calm skies. Late fall weather in Seattle is very unpredictable. There is always a chance of rain, wind, and colder temperatures.
