From its humble beginnings in 1970 when a group of friends from the University of Washington decided to hold their own marathon, the Seattle Marathon Family of Events has grown into one of the largest combination marathon/half marathon in the Northwest.


That first marathon 49 years ago sported less than 30 runners. This year, 8,000 participants are expected for the marathon and half marathon walking and running events.

• No Bandits. The Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon does not allow bandits on the course. Please show your support for our event by registering.

• The Seattle Marathon Family of events will take place rain or shine. Only a "force majeure" will be cause for cancellation.

• In the event of a cancellation, all registrations will be converted to virtual race registrations and any registration fees paid above the virtual race registration fee can be applied to future Seattle Marathon Association races. No refunds will be given.

• Race packets for all virtual registrations will be mailed out after November 29, 2020.

DISTANCE NOTE: Please note that while the directions on the routes shown below are accurate, because of slight variations in position on the roads/lanes, exact distances depicted on these map are not 100% accurate to the USATF-certified distance. Therefore these maps are to be used as a planning tools only.

Athletes using a wheelchair or hand crank are welcome to compete in the Marathon and Half Marathon races. Both courses are paved and provide wheelchair/hand crank athletes the opportunity for competition. Competitors must wear hard shell helmets and wheelchairs/hand cranks must be adequately equipped for safety.


Wheelchair/hand crank competitors should especially note the risks regarding the nature of the course such as bollards and the possibility of other traffic on the course.


All participants must be off the I-5 Express Lanes by 9:15am so that it may open to traffic at 9:30am. This allows participants a 27-minute/mile pace to reach mile 5. Any participants still on the I-5 Express at 9:15am will be shuttled off and allowed resume the race. No runners will be allowed to enter the I-5 Express after 8am.



All event routes will be opened to vehicle traffic at 2:30pm. This allows for a seven-hour finish time. You may still finish the race by obeying all normal traffic laws for pedestrians after the course is opened to vehicle traffic, however there will be limited on-course aid stations, Course Marshals and police support at that point. Finish Line staff and essential services will remain until every athlete has completed the event. 

Walkers remaining on the course after 2:30pm will take an alternate ending route to the finish line. Alternate Route Map



Each mile-marker will be labeled on the race courses on a portable toilet or stand-alone sign. Split times will be called at each marker (as permitted by the number of volunteers). Select split times will be available in results.”


Water/aid stations are approximately every two miles. There are 14 water/aid Stations on the full marathon course and 7 on the half marathon course. Refer to the course map for locations.


Water and Gatorade Endurance Formula sports drink (link to: ) will be available at each station in addition to basic medical items and Honey Bucket portable toilets.


SIS Energy Gel will be available at water stations at mile 5.4 for the full and half marathons and miles 9.7, 14.25 and 18.5 for the full marathon. Read a review about SIS Energy Gels here. You can find them online, in local bike shops and at Super Jock 'N Jill.


Each water/aid station will remain supplied until the last participant has passed.


Talking Rain is the official water sponsor of the Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon and will distributed at the finish line and in the Victory Recovery Area.



Medical assistance is provided by our Official Medical Coverage Sponsor, UW Medicine. If medical assistance is required on the race course or if you have to drop out, contact one of the radio operators, or an aid station attendant who will be able to summon emergency assistance or van transportation if required. If you drop out, please notify an aid station attendant, radio operator or anyone inside the information booth in the Victory Recovery Area so the information can be relayed to the event support staff. We keep track of each participant as they finish and if we are not told of an early drop-out, we will assume they are still on the course and contact their emergency contact if they can’t be located.


Spectators can watch finishers approach and cross the finish line inside Memorial Stadium. Convenient cheer spots on the course include: 5th Avenue, Gas Works Park, along the Fremont Cut and along Republican St as runners enter Memorial Stadium.


Come prepared for a variety of weather conditions. Average temperature for late November is mid-40s (7 deg. C) with cloudy and calm skies. Late fall weather in Seattle is very unpredictable. There is always a chance of rain, wind, and colder temperatures. 


Anyone can enter and enjoy our marathon and half marathon races, regardless of pace. Additionally, we offer comped entries to runners who can verify the following elite times within the last 2 years.

2020 RACE



Each participant is given a unique transponder that will be used to record your start and finish time. A B-Tag timing device is incorporated into your race bib and does not need to be returned. All results are based on net/actual time. However, you will also receive a gun time and split times along the course.


In order to receive an accurate time, please confirm that throughout the race your bib is:

  • Clearly visible on the front of the torso

  • Unaltered and unmodified - Do not fold or wrinkle

  • Pinned in all four corners

  • Not covered by jackets, running belts, water bottles, etc.


Not wearing the bib/tag will result in missing split times, which may result in disqualification. Unofficial results will be posted in the Victory Recovery Area and on the Results page on this website twenty minutes after the first runner crosses the finish line. Friends and family can check the website for up-to-the-minute race results. An official Results Issue with complete Marathon and Half Marathon results will be available online in mid-December.


Any change requests regarding the unofficial results must be submitted within three days after the race by contacting the Seattle Marathon Association office. Failure to contact us within three days may result in your times not being listed in our web results or in the Results Issue.

All Marathon and Half Marathon participants receive a long-sleeved technical fabric shirt and goody bag.

Finishers receive a finisher's medal, a downloadable certificate of completion, result issue, and individual care, both on the course and following the race. This includes food, beverage, space blanket, availability of medical care, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.


The Washington Sports Massage Team will provide a 15-minute professional sports massage to finishers for a $18 fee. Massages can be purchased on site or in advance using the entry form.


Integrative Medicine Group will provide acupuncture to finishers for free. There is no need to sign up for acupuncture in advance. Just go to the acupuncture booth on Race Day for walk-up service.


WSCA will be assisting UW Medicine at the finish line as well as providing complimentary chiropractic care in the Victory Recovery Area.



Bag Check is located in Memorial Stadium's north side tunnel, directly behind the upper stadium seats. Bag Check will be available to race participants starting at 6:30 am. Volunteers will be available to store and retrieve your bag. All bags must be clearly marked with your bib number. Under no circumstances should you bring valuables, as the Seattle Marathon Association is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Finishers taking 7 hours or longer may claim their bag at the Finish Line.


Any clothing or items left at the start line will be donated to charity. They will not be collected for later retrieval or brought to lost and found.


Any items found on the course (with the exception of those left at the start line) may be brought to the information booth in the Victory Recovery Area. All lost and found items not claimed at the Victory Recovery Area at the end of race day will be donated to charity. For high-value items (electronics, wallets, car keys, glasses, etc.) we will bring them back to the Seattle Marathon Association office and hold them until December 31. For information on lost and found items of value, please contact the Seattle Marathon Association Office at 206.729.3660, M-F between 9am and 4pm.


MarathonFoto is the Official Photographer of the Seattle Marathon. Be sure to smile for their cameras as you run or walk along the race course! MarathonFoto will photograph you multiple times throughout the race course as well as before and after the race. Make sure your bib number is clearly centered and visible so they will be able to identify you. View and order your photos within 1 to 3 days after the race at www.marathonfoto.com. 


Each finisher a commemorative finisher's medal at the finish line. In addition, special awards (mailed after the event) are given to the top finishers for both the Marathon Run and Half Marathon Run in the following categories.

  • Overall Awards: Presented to the top three men and women finishers in both the Marathon and Half Marathon events.

  • Age Division Awards: Presented to the top ten men and women in each age division in both the Marathon and Half Marathon as follows: 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85 and over.

  • Masters Division Awards: Presented to the fastest male and female finishers, age 40 and over, in both events.

  • Active Military Awards: Presented to the top three male and female finishers in both events who are actively serving in the U.S. military.


Walk Events: Please note that the Marathon Walk and Half Marathon Walk will be timed but are not intended to be race walking competitions as set forth by the USATF. No awards will be presented for these events. Finishers will have their achievement commemorated with an alphabetical listing - including finish time - in the Results Issue.


Award Presentation: Overall 1st - 3rd place awards will be presented to winners at the finish line. Age division and other awards will be mailed in the weeks following the event.








Thousands of runners, walkers and their supporters will be converging on the Seattle Center on race day. Be sure to plan ahead and allow time to get there early, check your bags and get to the start line on time.


The Seattle Marathon Association does not provide transportation to the Start Line.


Driving and ParkingThe start line is at 5th Ave & Harrison St in front of the Museum of Pop Culture


Parking is available at the Seattle Center, (link to: ) on the street (link to: ) or in a number of nearby paid lots.

Public Transportation: King Country Metro offers several bus routes that connect to the Seattle Center. Visit https://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov/ to find a route. Keep in mind that holiday schedules and special event schedules may apply this weekend.


Walking from the Westin Seattle: For participants staying at The Westin Seattle, the Start Line is a 0.9 mile walk from the hotel. Head north on 5th Ave. Follow the Monorail track (running above 5th Ave.) to the start at 5th and Harrison.



Seattle Marathon Bus Shuttle: Transportation from the Victory Recovery Area to The Westin Seattle will be available from 9:00am until the final participant crosses the finish line. This service is free to participants and $2.00 for family and friends. Buses will be staged on Mercer Avenue in front of the Victory Recovery Area (Seattle Center Exhibition Hall).


Seattle Center Monorail: The Seattle Center Monorail runs from the Seattle Center to the Westlake Center. Go to www.seattlemonorail.com for hours and prices on race day.
